For the 1st time in 20 years there has been a drop in the amount of televisions in Americans homes. According to the Nielsen Company from 2008 to 2010 there was a 2.2% decrease. It is surprising to see a drop in the amount of TVs in US home in any amount. A decline in TV sets in US home has not been seen since the last big recession in the early 1990's.
So what are the reasons for this sudden decline in TV sets in US homes? The Nielsen Company found there are two major reasons for the decline. One of the biggest factors is a combination of the current recession combined with the transition of the move from analog TV signals to digital. For the homes hit hardest during the recession they simply can not afford to make the switch even with the government subsidies.
The second item mentioned for the decline is the fact that more and more of the younger generation are tech savvy it isn't that they are not watching TV they are just not doing it from a TV set. The younger generation is consuming media on online through their computers and other devices instead of purchasing a TV set to get the same thing.
So a combination of the bad economy as well as that people are being more tech savvy might have contributed to a lower percentage of TV sets in the home but that has not stopped those individuals that have them getting even more out of them. In 2011 CES (Consumer Electronics Show) boasted its best attendance ever. At CES you could see the latest in home theater technologies like 3D televisions and surround sound system that would blow your mind.
In conclusion, if you are worried about TV's going away you can relax knowing that even though there are less American that have a TV set in their home almost 97% of American's still do. And while 97% is not 100% it is pretty close.
