The Samsung UE65C8000 Reviewed

By Shirley Merritt

The Samsung UE65C8000 3D LED TV is one of the Korean consumer electronics maker's newest offerings and it's quite a television to behold. Making use of light emitting diodes (LEDs) to backlight its display, the TV is one of the slimmest on the market. It's also a 65 inch unit that is able to project its display in 3D and even take standard 2D and convert it to 3D with the right equipment.

While nobody would ever accuse this TV of being inexpensive at nearly 4400 British pounds, it might be of some comfort to know that it can be found online for about 600 pounds less than that. At any rate, it's jam packed with features and functions that would justify the price, regardless. Samsung seems to have really grabbed hold of the big screen television market nowadays, by the way.

This particular unit comes with Freeview HD and Samsung's Internet-at-Home features, which make it possible to access a number of UK-specific satellite channels and viewing options. The UE65C8000 is part of Samsung's Luxia line of LED TVs, meaning that it makes use of light emitting diodes to backlight the display screen rather than older-style florescent tubing.

When backlit with LEDs rather than fluorescent tubes, a television can be created that's much slimmer than standard flat-panel TVs, whether plasma or LED/LCD in character. This particular model comes in at less than 30 mm in thickness around the display area. This is in keeping with Samsung's reputation for producing handsome-looking, yet very slim, big-screen televisions, generally speaking.

On screen resolution with the UE65C8000 is also extremely nice, coming in as it does at 1920 by 1080p. This means the TV is delivering actual high definition rather than a display that's considered "high definition ready." Samsung is also taking care to include one of its better motion control engines, a 200 Hz model that makes even 3-D images look very sharp and well-defined.

With most TVs at this price point, it's a given that they'll include more than a few features and functions that help them to connect to a large number of different electronic components. That's the case with this TV, including as it does four different HDMI input ports, Ethernet, scart and USB 2.0. As well, the Korean maker also includes audio return channel technologies to help bolster the total package.

As well, there's nothing low-performance about this Samsung's surround sound audio system, either. It has a high-quality digital noise filter and Dolby Digital Plus, ensuring that the sound put out by the TV is first rate across the board. Of course, any television can benefit from a connection to the quality home theater system, so keep that in mind.

The Samsung UE65C8000 is one of Samsung's newest and most high-quality big-screen television offerings for 2010. It's also the first of its kind from the Korean electronics maker that displays imagery in 3-D. It has a list price of almost 4400 British pounds, including VAT, which means it won't be a bargain purchase. However, it delivers a great many features, making it easy to see why people want to buy it.
