By Julia Desai

The Sony KDL40W5810 TV boasts some of the manufacturer's latest technology improvements, making it definitely worth a look by those shopping for a quality high-definition LCD TV.

Let's start with picture, which is a major reason we buy TVs. The Sony KDL40W5810 comes with a 1080-pixel screen resolution, tops among LCD TVs. What's more, the screen is set on a swivel base, so that users can turn it to the best viewing angle no matter where they're sitting in a room. The set is fully compliant with digital broadcasting signals, thanks to Freesat, Sony's program that pulls both TV and radio digital signals without needing a cable subscription.

Sony updated its Bravia Engine to enhance audio and video clarity. For instance, when a program's sound diminishes, such as when actors are whispering, the Sony KDL40W5810 has a feature called Voice Volume. This enhancement makes voices clearly understandable no matter what the sound level of the show. Another audio enhancement is Sony's S-Force system. This software provides theatre quality sound by projecting sound as the ear hears it, without bouncing sound waves off a secondary booster. In addition, another audio feature call Steady Sound will keep volume where the viewer places it, no matter what level comes up. This means no more scrambling for the remote to turn down screaming commercials!

Sony also has worked to improve sound quality on the Sony KDL40W5810 with three features: Voice Volume, Steady Sound and S-Force audio. Voice Volume keeps the sound of voices level, even when actors speak against loud background noise, so that dialogue stays understandable. Steady Sound is designed to keep volume where the viewer sets it. No more reaching for the remote to turn down roaring commercials. And S-Force provides theatre quality sound by transmitting audio as the ear perceives it without bouncing sound waves off a booster.

Many consumers will be most impressed by the news that the Sony KDL40W5810 TV substantially reduces its environmental impact. Recycled materials were used to produce both the set and its packaging, so that both can be recycled again when they've outlived their usefulness. Sony also has included the power-saving "Eco technology in the Sony KDL40W5810. Using a light sensor to detect the room's ambient light, Eco reduces brightness on the TV, thus using less power. This feature may even save viewers money on their power bills if they happen to watch lots of TV shows and movies.

The Sony KDL40W5810 includes a USB port to allow users to upload videos, still pictures and music to the TV. Picture Frame mode is the feature that allows display of still photos on the TV screen. The TV comes programmed with Applicast to access Sony's Internet channel, which lets viewers add widgets to the TV screen so they can check stock market quotes, weather forecasts and similar online applications.

Sony also has included its Applicast software to link the TV to Sony's Internet channel, where downloadable widgets will allow viewers to access online information such as weather forecasts, stock reports and more.

The Sony KDL40W5810's combination of sharp image, vibrant colour, quality sound and online connectivity provide an array of features that consumers value when looking an HD LCD TV.
