Wireless FM Modulators - Better Than Wired

By James M. Boersma

In general there are two devices, the wired and wireless FM modulator, which convert audio from your iPod or MP3 player into RF signals that are then sent to your automobile's stereo system and played on an unused FM station. Typically, the modulator functions as a wired device, but there are quality modulators that are wireless.

The debate is simple: which product is the best? Most people assume that a hardwired setup gives you higher quality sound. That is, however, not entirely true.

Wireless options provide the user with less hassle, as there are no cords to mess with. In addition, they provide easy accessibility, instead of hindering the user to one vehicle.

Below are some of the problems, and steps of the installation, that go along with a wired FM modulator:

1. You need to pull apart the dash, and then pull out your factory radio, while being careful not to cause any damage to the current setup.

2. You'll need to splice the proper wires (which may be quite difficult or confusing for a first-timer) and connect them with the correct wires from the car with electrical tape.

3. You'll also have to put it all back together after your done - hopefully - connecting it properly.

4. You'll have to go through the hassle of uninstalling the product should you decide you don't want it, or if the modulator stops working for whatever reason.

5. Since it's permanently installed, that means it will be inconvenient for someone leasing a car or looking to sell.

6. You aren't able to use it in multiple vehicles because it is permanently installed.

Just think, if your modulator is hidden behind your dash, how easy will it be to get to it should any problems arise?

A wireless modulator FM will be so much easier to install and manage. When I say easy to install, I mean there is no installation; this allows you to transport the device to any location you desire. Any adjustments or modifications are easily made since the modulator can be placed in a convenient location of your choosing.

That is not to say that all wireless FM modulators do not come without some problems. It is important to avoid the cheap, average, and generic modulators that can be purchased over the counter for $15 dollars. They will give you lousy audio performance, as their signal is easily interrupted. However, if you purchase a high quality wireless FM modulator, it will give you great performance superseding that of a wired FM modulator.

Below are the attributes of a quality wireless FM modulator:

1. An unlimited amount of uses because it is compatible with almost any audio source you can think of.

2. The capability to choose from any frequency on the public FM band.

3. Volume and mute options, stereo to mono settings, automatic gain control, preset frequencies to switch between favorites, a microphone plug-in and a manual on/off switch.

4. A wall adapter, USB, cigarette lighter and batteries can all be used to power the device.

5. Great audio with essentially no interference because of a giant amount of transmission power (about 150 feet). This distance is near the limit allowed by the FCC.

A wireless FM modulator gives the user the peace of mind, allowing them not to worry about the hassle of installation or repair, and it empowers them to consider what other wide array of places they would like to use this product in (be it house, dormitory, apartment, etc).
